Southwark Cathedral stands in the ancient parish of St Mary Overie, meaning over the river. It offers a place of calm in one of the busiest parts of the borough.

As you enter the Cathedral, walk up the left hand-side. At the cross junction (the transept), on the left you will see the elaborate tomb of Lionel Lockyer. This 17th century quack doctor claimed to have trapped the rays of the sun in a pill that cured many illnesses. He grew rich from the idea and left money to the poor of Southwark, though there is no evidence he had any formal medical training.
