This livery hall was rebuilt in 1673 after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. The word ‘stationer’ comes from the stations, or stalls, set up by medieval scribes and illustrators in nearby St Paul’s Churchyard.

The slate plaque with a sun motif commemorates Wynkyn de Worde, apprentice to William Caxton and the first printer to set up in Fleet Street, trading under the sign of the sun. Stationers produced a wide range of books, including medical textbooks and student guides known as ‘crammers’.
