The Golden Hinde – Ships and Stories

St Mary Overie's Dock, Cathedral St, London SE1 9DE

The Golden Hinde is a full-size reconstruction of the ship commanded by Sir Francis Drake, which sailed around the world between 1577 and 1580. In Shakespeare’s lifetime, ships like this carried people, spices, stories, and wealth across oceans, linking England to distant places such as India and beyond.
In Act 2 Scene 1 of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Titania remembers sitting by the sea with her friend, watching merchant ships fill with wind and life. The sea becomes a place of warmth, friendship, imagination, and memory.
Standing here, land and sea feel close together. A ship rests on the shore, and stories of long voyages meet the everyday world, just as they do in the play.
If this ship could take you anywhere, where would you go?
What adventure would change you forever?
